This South African Two Rand coin is composed of 22-karat gold and secured in a 14K gold frame. The front side features a portrait of Johan Anthoniszoon van Riebeeck, known as Jan van Riebeeck, Dutch colonial administrator and founder of Cape Town and considered by many people to be the founding father of the South African nation. The portrait is encircled by the Arikaans inscription "EENDRAG MAAK MAG" followed by its English translation, "UNITY IS STRENGTH".
The back side features a Springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa, encircled by the Afrikaans inscription "SUID-AFRIKA" followed by the year 1969 and its English translation, "SOUTH AFRICA". The value of the coin is denoted by the "2R" at the bottom, signifying two rand.
